Indonesia forecasts 14% beef supply shortage in 2013

A shortage of beef supply by next year has been predicted by Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture which may reach 14% or 75,000 tonnes of the total beef demand, which amounts to 535,000 tonnes.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health Syukur Iwantoro said, "Based on the calculation of supply and demand, the supply shortage of beef next year will amount to 75,000 tonnes. We will meet the shortage with imports. Beef imports will be divided into 60% from feeder cattle imports and 40% from frozen beef imports."

Although data on the predicted shortage of beef has been obtained, said Iwantoro, beef import quotas will be determined through a coordination meeting with Indonesia's Ministry of Coordinating Economic.
