India aims to double seafood export value in three years

India's Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) plans to raise seafood exports from US$5 billion to US$10 billion in the next three years, the Hindu reported.

As part of the effort, Indian officials will meet stakeholders, address issues in production and discuss the development of harbours, maintenance of quality and popularising of seafood.

In addition, MPEDA officials are holding training sessions for aquaculture farmers on cultivating high-quality yields.

MPEDA chairperson, Leena Nair, said that of the nearly US$300 billion that India earned in foreign exchange through exports of commodities, MPEDA contributed US$5 billion.

According to MPEDA's deputy director for aquaculture, Vijayawada S. Kandan, India's seafood exports include shrimp, shell fish, fin fish, live ornamental fish, Indian squid, cuttlefish, crab varieties, pomfret varieties, tuna, seer fish, sea-bass and grouper. US, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia, Russia and other European countries, South East and the Middle East countries are the main markets for Indian seafood.
