University only US representative in EU-funded aquaculture consortium
The University of New England is the only US representative in a consortium which will stimulate development, education and communication of sustainable aquaculture on four continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Portland Press Herald reported.
Called the AquaVitae Consortium, the consortium will also see the participation of 35 other partners which consists of universities, research institutions and companies from Scandinavia, Europe, South America and southern Africa.
The four-year initiative will be supported by a US$8.9 million fund provided by the EU and will explore the growth of species low on the food chain, from microalgae to fin fish.
The University of New England, along with the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research, will fund travel to partner institutions for research and collaboration, the school said.
