Central Papua, Indonesia intensifies measures to combat ASF

The Central Papua, Indonesia provincial government has ramped up efforts to combat the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus, including intensive disinfectant spraying in pig cages owned by local livestock farmers.

Acting Governor Anwar Harun Damanik announced the measures in a press release, stating that restrictions on the entry and exit of pork in the region remain strictly enforced. A designated burial site for pigs that have succumbed to ASF has also been prepared as part of containment efforts.

Governor Damanik reiterated the government's commitment to tackling the ASF outbreak, which has caused significant losses for swine farmers in the region. The appointed task force has been instructed to prioritise controlling the virus's spread to mitigate its impact on local communities.

The ASF outbreak has contributed to a sharp rise in beef prices, with costs increasing from IDR 150,000 (US$9.27) per kg to IDR 180,000 (US$11.13) per kg. The government is urging all stakeholders to remain focused on addressing the situation.

In response to the rising beef prices, the Central Papua provincial government has tasked the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) with implementing swift measures to stabilise the market. Subsidies and other strategies are being introduced to regulate beef prices at the consumer level and prevent panic buying.

Governor Damanik assured the public that the provincial government continues to take proactive steps to manage the ASF outbreak and stabilise food prices.

As part of inflation control measures, Governor Damanik and the TPID team visited a local traditional market. The visit was aimed at monitoring food prices ahead of the new year and ensuring that essential goods remain accessible to residents.
