Bac Ninh, Vietnam transforms livestock farming with focus on industrialisation

Bac Ninh province, Vietnam has seen a significant transformation in its livestock farming practices, moving away from small-scale operations near residential areas to concentrated industrial farms focused on commodity production.
This shift has been guided by Vietnam's Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries for Bac Ninh province.
Currently, Bac Ninh is home to 728 livestock farms, categorised under the country's Law on Animal Husbandry. These include 52 large-scale farms, 100 medium-scale farms, and 576 small-scale farms. Annually, these farms contribute substantially to the market, producing around 610,000 swine breeds, 32 million poultry breeds, 360 million eggs, and 1,600 tonnes of fresh milk.
High-tech applications are a growing trend among livestock farms in the province. Of the 728 farms, 89 employ advanced technologies, including cage systems, closed barns with cooling, automated feeding and drinking systems, and automatic sanitation. Two farms have fully automated their production processes, while five utilise information technology for breeding herd management.
Chain-linked livestock farming has also emerged as a critical component of Bac Ninh's agricultural strategy. The province has 56 livestock farms participating in chain linkages, including 15 farms processing for major enterprises such as DABACO Vietnam Group Joint Stock Company, CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, and CJ Agri Vietnam Co., Ltd. Additionally, nine livestock service cooperatives and livestock clubs have contributed significantly to the development of value chain links, enhancing the province's agricultural industry, and improving farmers' incomes.
By 2025, Bac Ninh aims to further develop its livestock sector by increasing the number of high-tech farms to 132. This will include maintaining 100% of its 52 large-scale farms and converting 80% of medium-scale farms into high-tech facilities. The province also plans to expand its chain-linked farms from the current 56 to 62, with a focus on key products such as breeding pigs, breeding chickens, pork, and eggs.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Ninh province is committed to implementing these solutions to strengthen the agricultural sector, enhance production efficiency, and improve the livelihoods of farmers.
