Russia's winter grain production surpasses spring grain volumes
For the first time in the history of Russia, in 2010, winter grain production volumes surpassed spring grain production volumes.
According to the preliminary data of the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation (Rosstat), general production volumes of winter grains in the country totalled 31.417 million tonnes, as opposed to 45.84 million tonnes last year. Production of spring grains lowered to the level of 29.508 million tonnes, against 51.27 million tonnes last year.
The general production volumes of grains and leguminous plants totalled 60.93 million tonnes, a decrease of 36.2 million tonnes or 37.3% compared to the level of 2009. The fall of grain production volumes was caused by the summer droughts in the current year, which damaged 25,000 enterprises in the country.
Production volumes of wheat - the main grain in Russia - totalled 41.468 million tonnes, down 20.18 million tonnes or 32.7% compared to 2009 results.
Corn production in Russia decreased to the level of 3.073 million tonnes, as opposed to 3.963 million tonnes last year.
