Bangladesh's fisheries adviser calls for increased production of freshwater prawn, tiger shrimp in planned manner

Fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter at a meeting in Khulna, Bangladesh, on December 28 said that internationally recognised and appreciated freshwater prawn, galda, and tiger shrimp, bagda, must be conserved and their production should be increased in a planned manner.

She made the remarks as chief guest at the exchange of views with shrimp farmers after visiting a conserved shrimp farm at Gutudia Bardanga under Dumuria in the district, a press release stated.

Farida Akhter said that cultivation of galda and bagda varieties had ensured the household nutrition as both the men and women involved in this farming had been contributing in improving the household financial well-being and creating new employments.

She said: "The Galda variety is not farmed in many countries of the world, therefore, Galda is a matter of pride for Bangladesh."

She mentioned that alongside taking effective initiatives to resolve the water logging by dredging, the government would provide necessary support to enhance farmers' capacity through various projects.
