Proximar Seafood's first batch of salmon in Japan transferred to post smolt grow-out facility

Proximar Seafood AS has achieved a significant milestone with the successful transfer of the first batch of Atlantic salmon from the nursery department to the post smolt grow-out facility (PSG), Fish Farmer reported.

The company anticipates harvesting these fish at its Oyama facility near Mount Fuji, Japan, during the third quarter of 2024.

Dharma Rajeswaran, chief operating officer of Proximar, expressed excitement about initiating operations in the PSG facility, emphasising the meticulous preparation by the team for this crucial transfer. The move into the new building is deemed successful, marking a noteworthy accomplishment for Proximar Seafood.

Following the completion of construction works in September, the installation and testing of the RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) equipment have progressed swiftly in the first module of the post grow-out facility. The grow-out building has been primed to receive the first batches, aligning with the established schedule. The ongoing installation of RAS equipment in the remaining three modules will proceed in the coming months, in accordance with the required capacity and production plan.

The fish transferred were initially introduced into Proximar's hatchery in 2022. After undergoing the first feeding and nursery department stages, they were successfully smoltified and transferred to the first operational module in the PSG during the current week. Throughout this developmental period, the fish exhibited robust growth and low mortality, showcasing the facility's excellent performance.

Joachim Nielsen, CEO of Proximar, was enthusiastic about reaching this phase of production as the first commercial producer of Atlantic salmon in Japan. He highlighted the company's confidence in providing Atlantic salmon with optimal conditions for fish welfare and growth, leveraging the PSG facility's technology similar to the nursery.

At present, there are nine batches in operation at Oyama, with the tenth batch scheduled to join by the end of December. Proximar Seafood plans to provide more comprehensive biological details in a production update early next month.
