ASF detected in Hong Kong, 2,800 swine to be culled

Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) has confirmed the detection of the African swine fever (ASF) on a swine farm in Yuen Long, with approximately 2,800 swine to be culled, Asia News Network reported.

The AFCD officials conducted sample testing on 60 swine at a licensed swine farm in Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long. Subsequent results revealed that at least four swine tested positive for ASF.

In response, the AFCD has suspended the transportation of swine from the affected farm and initiated culling operations.

The department promptly informed local swine farmers of the situation, advising them to report any abnormal health conditions observed in their livestock. Additionally, inspections and virus testing will be carried out at two other pig farms within A 3 km radius of the affected farm.

To further enhance biosecurity measures, AFCD staff are conducting visits to all local licensed swine farms, ensuring the proper implementation of safety protocols, and maintaining close surveillance to detect abnormalities in swine at the earliest stage possible.

The AFCD has also implemented a daily clearance arrangement in Sheung Shui and Tsuen Wan slaughterhouses, ensuring that live swine are slaughtered within 24 hours of admittance. This arrangement involves the thorough cleaning and disinfection of lairages in different areas of the slaughterhouses.
