China allows beef imports from Uruguay starting January 2024

China's General Administration of Customs has announced its decision to permit the import of frozen and chilled beef from Uruguay effective January 2, 2024, Nasdaq reported.

According to a statement issued by customs, exporters must be situated in regions recognised as free from foot-and-mouth disease by the World Organization for Animal Health.

In November 2023, Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou said he wanted to accelerate negotiations over a free trade agreement between Uruguay, China, and the Mercosur trade bloc at a meeting with China's Premier Li Qiang.

At present, Uruguayan beef, which constituted 67% of the South American country's exports to China in 2022, according to COMTRADE data, is subject to a 12% tariff.
