Drop in Philippines' backyard and commercial farm swines as of October 1

 

 

As of October 1, the Philippines' swine population in both backyard farms and commercial farms posted decreases of 5.4% and 27.0%, respectively.

 

The country's total swine inventory was estimated at 11.27 million heads (-13.4% compared with the same period of 2019, 13.01 million heads). Of the total inventory, 68.8% were raised in backyard farms while the remaining 31.2% were from commercial farms.

 

In terms of inventory, the top three regions were Calabarzon, Western Visayas and Central Visayas. These regions comprised 33.9% of the country's total swine inventory.

 

The total hog production from July to September 2020 was estimated at 508.91 thousand tonnes, liveweight (-7.7% compared with the same period of 2019, 551.62 thousand tonnes).

 

In terms of production, the main region was Calabarzon, producing 90.89 thousand tonnes during the quarter, followed by Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao (55.95 thousand and 50.10 thousand tonnes, respectively). These regions accounted for 38.7% of the Philippines's total hog production.

 

Compared with their levels in the same quarter of 2019, six regions reported decreases in production during the period, with Central Luzon exhibiting the biggest contraction (-45.6%). This region recorded a production of 55.95 thousand tonnes this quarter, from 102.92 thousand tonnes in the same quarter a year ago.

 

The average farmgate price of hogs upgraded for slaughter from July to September 2020 was ₱104.73 (US$2.18) per kilogramme, liveweight (+1.1% compared with the same period a year ago, ₱103.61 per kilogramme).
