Ukraine to increases area under spring grain crops
Ukraine is planning to sow spring grain crops on an area of 8.8 million hectares in 2012, up 13.6% compared to 2011, according to the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry.
According to the report, in particular, the area under corn for grain will grow by 18.6%, to 4.3 million hectares, under barley by 10%, to 2.85 million hectares, under oats by 7.5%, to 310,000 hectares, under grain and leguminous crops by 6%, to 410,000 hectares, under millet by 21%, to 200,000 hectares, and under spring wheat by 4.6%, to 300,000 hectares.
The Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry, citing preliminary data from the regions, also reported that as of December 13, 2011, the entire cultivated area under grain crops in all categories of farms for the 2012 harvest was expected to reach 27.2 million hectares, which is 1% less than for the 2011 harvest.
