South Korea reports 24th case of lumpy skin disease in cattle

South Korea has confirmed an additional case of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle, bringing the total number of cases this year to 24, the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced.

The latest case was identified at a cattle farm in Goheung, located approximately 330 km south of Seoul. The farmhouses 54 milk cattle, according to the ministry.

In response to the outbreak, the ministry has imposed a standstill order affecting personnel and vehicles associated with the affected farm and related facilities. Disinfection operations are underway as authorities work to prevent the further spread of the disease.

Lumpy skin disease is a highly contagious illness that affects cattle and buffalo. It is characterised by skin lesions, fever, and loss of appetite, which can lead to decreased milk production. In severe cases, the disease can result in death.

The disease is primarily transmitted through mosquitoes and other blood-feeding insects, posing significant challenges for containment and control in affected regions.
