Malaysia looking into listing imported eggs as controlled items

The Malaysian government is looking into listing imported eggs as controlled items, one of the proposed measures to ensure egg prices remain affordable to consumers, The Star reported.
Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid, secretary-general of the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (MAFS), said their ministry was discussing with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry about the issue.
This comes after a temporary permit was issued on December 16 to import eggs from abroad in an effort to address the recent shortage of eggs in the country
The eggs imported from abroad are a little small in size, but the MAFS' current responsibility is to address the supply issue and make sure eggs are widely available.
She said her ministry will ensure that imported eggs are of good quality.
The minister was attending the North-East Monsoon Food Kit Distribution Programme and Chicken Egg Distribution Intervention at the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) headquarters.
Prior to that, Haslina looked over Fama's preparations for delivering 62,500 food and egg kits to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), which will be given to flood victims in Malaysia's east coast states.
