Italy to field test immuno-contraceptive vaccine for wild boars

Italy's Ministry of Health has authorised field trials of immuno-contraceptive vaccine GonaCon for wild boars.

The vaccine was developed by the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (of the United States Department of Agriculture) Wildlife Service.

The zooprophylactic institutes of Lazio-Toscana and Mezzogiorno will carry out the tests. The experiment will consist of the oral use of GonaCo in wild boars, for a period not exceeding 24 months.

The immunocontraceptive has already been tested in the United States but in the European Union, Italy is the first to authorise field trials.
