Nor-Feed prize awarded to researcher for thesis on polyphenols diet supplementation of broilers

Nor-Feed's veterinarian prize will be awarded to Kamil Sierżant for his thesis dealing with the polyphenols diet supplementation of broilers during the award's third edition.
The thesis pursues two objectives: studying the effect of meat oxidative stability of two plant extracts with a high antioxidant potential (blackcurrant and rosemary) in supplementation to broilers' diet; and evaluating other types of polyphenols from rosemary, pine bark and olive leaf extracts as well as quercetin.
The main results indicate a better oxidative stability of broilers meat with diets supplemented with blackcurrant and rosemary. A better digestibility of dry matters and nitrogen-free extractives in chickens fed with a diet supplemented with blackcurrant extract is also observed.
In addition, a clear tendency to reduce the number of CFU of bacteria, molds and yeasts in the ileum content of chickens supplemented with other tested polyphenolic additives has been noted.
"French Paradox is not limited only to human being", said Sierżant; "I believe in the use of plants-based alternatives, specifically in animal nutrition to limit or even stop the use of antibiotics."
The EUR5,000 (US$5,942) veterinarian prize will be delivered to Sierzant by Pierre Chicoteau, Nor-Feed's founder and CEO.
