US pork exports to EU up by 50 percent
US pork exports to Europe increased by 50 percent in the first half of 2007 compared to the same period last year, according to USDA.
The weak dollar has led to increased pork imports into Europe from the US.
Meanwhile in EU, supply of pork has outstripped demand. Pork consumption is around 42.6 kilogramme per person and is expected to remain at the same level in 2008.
Europe's pig supply is also growing. In 2007, there was 1.9 percent more pigs bred than in 2006. Growth was concentrated in Poland, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands.
Elsewhere in the world, US pork exports have gained market share at the cost of their Canadian and European competitors.
