China emerges as key market for Russian pork exports in 2024

China has become the primary driver of Russian pork exports in 2024, according to Yuri Kovalev, director general of Russia's National Union of Pig Farmers.

Speaking at the Agrotrends 2024–2025 conference, Kovalev highlighted that China is now among the top three buyers of Russian pork products. By the end of the year, shipments to China are expected to approach 50,000 tonnes, significantly boosting overall exports.

The National Union of Pig Farmers predicts that total Russian pork exports for the year could reach 300,000 tonnes. This marks a substantial increase from last year's figure of approximately 240,000 tonnes, which accounted for about 5% of Russia's production. Kovalev attributed the growth primarily to China's opening its market to Russian pork this year.

"Our exports continue to grow at a good pace," Kovalev said. "Last year, we reached approximately 240,000 tons. This is the maximum we could achieve in open markets. But starting this year, China has opened for us. And so, you can see that China is providing us with all of this year's growth."
