October sees 154 million chicks in Polish market

Poland has seen a record-breaking 154 million chicks bred for fast meat production entering its domestic market in a single month.
New data released by Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS) shows that October recorded the highest number of so-called broiler hatches since records began, up by 5.5 million compared with the previous record set last year.
"The demand for chicks for poultry production is so high that we're not only breaking domestic production records, but also importing the chicks we lack," Katarzyna Gawrońska, a managing director of Poland's National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers, told agricultural outlet Agronews.
"In the first ten months of 2025, we imported almost 35.5 million birds from abroad."
Poland is the European Union's largest poultry producer, accounting for about 21% of European production.
With poultry prices remaining high for most of the year, the value of Polish exports in the first nine months of 2025 reached nearly €3.9 billion (US$4.6 billion), an increase of over 19% compared to last year.
The increase in value, however, did not match the growth in volume, suggesting the trend was driven by favorable pricing conditions on international markets.
"While the value of exports increased significantly, their volume fell by 3%. This shows that we benefited from rising prices, but the volume of meat exported from our country decreased," said Gawrońska.
Poland's substantial share of the European market makes its poultry sector heavily reliant on exports.
With almost 2.89 million tonnes of poultry produced annually, Poland's production exceeds its domestic consumption by a staggering 50% compared with an average of about 9% among other European top poultry producers like Spain, France, and Germany.
"Such a huge share of exports in total production is unique on a global scale. It's a source of pride, but at the same time, with production as high as it is now, it's a significant risk factor," added Gawrońska.
