India is Asia's 2nd Largest Fish Producer After China
According to a report by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), India ranks world's fourth largest fish producer, second in Asia with China at number one position.
As a result of concerted efforts by the India's Central and State Governments, fish production has been increasing in the country, reaching a record level of 5.96 million tons during 2000-01. It is expected to reach a level of 6.05 mt during 2002-03, the authority said. The country has recorded strident progress in fish production which was just 7.5 lakh tons in 1950-51.
The Union Agriculture Ministry's Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has undertaken several programmes for the promotion of fishing sector in the country.
In its bid to further boost fish production, the Centre has sanctioned six major fishing harbours, 50 minor fishing harbours and 184 fish landing centres. Out of these, six major fishing harbours, 33 minor fishing harbours and 130 fish landing centres have already been completed.
These additional infrastructure are expected to increase fish output in the coming years.
