Pennsylvania, US Agriculture Secretary invites research proposals for US$450,000 grants

Russell Redding, Agriculture Secretary for Pennsylvania, United States, is soliciting proposals for research grants totalling US$450,000 through the newly established Centre for Poultry and Livestock Excellence, a key initiative under the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, National Hog Farmer reported.

With a budget allocation of US$1 million for the fiscal year 2023-24, this centre stands as a pivotal investment in the future of Pennsylvania agriculture, reflecting Governor Josh Shapiro's commitment to the sector.

Redding emphasised the importance of funding research projects that enhance the state's ability to address complex challenges, particularly in the face of threats like the highly pathogenic avian influenza crisis. He said that research feeds innovation and productivity, keeping Pennsylvania's US$132.5 billion agriculture industry growing.

The centre, which has received US$4.5 million in investments since 2019, plays a vital role in fostering innovation and fortifying Pennsylvania's animal agriculture sector. Notably, it has been instrumental in managing the avian influenza outbreak in 2022 and early 2023.

Research proposals are invited with a focus on poultry, swine, sheep, and goat production. Key areas of interest include advancing biosecurity measures, enhancing emergency preparation and response to animal diseases, bolstering the state's animal agriculture infrastructure, and promoting workforce skill proficiency and technology adoption, including telemedicine use by veterinarians.

Moreover, proposals addressing food security by improving the state's supply chain and mitigating risks are encouraged. The centre seeks applied research initiatives that tackle emerging diseases and their economic impact, explore regenerative livestock production, and delve into precision farming methods.
