Cambodia to take action on rising swine prices

The Cambodian government has agreed on a number of measures to address rising live swine prices, following requests from livestock farmers in the country, Khmer Times reported.

The measures include requesting Cambodia's customs department to crack down on illegal frozen pork imports, and implementing a standalone online system to share information and take rapid action, according to the respective authorities.

The government also decided to form a working group of attorneys to examine the Animal Health and Animal Production Law and recommend changes to make it more consistent with domestic, regional, and global requirements.

The ministerial group includes Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Srun Pov, president of the Cambodian Livestock Association, applauded the new measures. He said it will help address the problem of meat prices in the domestic market, particularly the falling prices of locally produced pork that are driving some Cambodian livestock farmers into debt.

He said import of frozen meat is a problem that lowers the price of locally produced pork, forcing some swine farmers to shut down their operations.
