Chinese seafood giant Joyvio Food opens salmon processing plant in Chile
Major Chinese seafood firm Joyvio Food has opened the biggest salmon processing plant in Chile, located in the Magallanes region, Fish Information & Services reported.
Tang Yin, chief executive officer of Joyvio Food, said the quality of fresh and frozen salmon in the area is expected to change as a result of the new facility, which was constructed with an inventive production line using cutting-edge technology.
Joyvio Food owns salmon farmer Australis Seafoods.
With a processing capacity of 72,000 tonnes per year, Dumestre is the first major intelligent processing facility in Magallanes.
Whole fresh fish are shipped from Dumestre to markets in Brazil and the US after being slaughtered, or primary processed, and then cut and gutted. Frozen whole fish are sent to Russia, the US, China, Korea, and Japan. Fish cleaned and gutted on floating ice are shipped to recycling facilities in Magallanes or other areas.
Construction for the Dumestre project started in 2019 with a US$70 million investment.
Tang said the new plant will gradually be expanded as long as refining costs continue to decline.
In Q3 2022 at Australis, production costs rose significantly to US$4.50/kg from Q2's US$4.17/kg and Q3's US$3.76/kg.
Joyvio said the rising costs are due to higher feed costs, delayed harvests brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic that increased the cost of smolt, and global inflation that increased the cost of logistics and maintenance.
