FrieslandCampina launches "Nourishing a better planet" sustainability programme
FrieslandCampina has announced on December 15 the launch of its sustainability programme, "Nourishing a better planet."
"It is a programme focusing on a positive impact on farmers, society and planet. Our role as FrieslandCampina is to nourish a growing world population with good, safe and affordable nutrition, whilst taking our responsibility (and) leaving a sustainable impact across our whole value chain - from grass to glass," said Royal FrieslandCampina NV CEO Hein Schumacher.
"Building on a strong foundation of continuous sustainability improvements over the years we will focus on six priorities and accelerate to nourish a better planet."
Schumacher added: "FrieslandCampina is uniquely positioned because we own a large part of that 'grass to glass' chain. This gives us the opportunity to lead with an integral approach working closely together with our farmers and our customers. At the same time, it requires us to take responsibility and play a leading role in making a lasting positive impact."
The six priorities of "Nourishing a better planet" are:
- Better nutrition, affordable for everyone: Nourishing the growing world population with the power of dairy - good, healthy, tasty and affordable nutrition;
- Better living for farmers: Paying the highest possible performance price to FrieslandCampina's 17,500 member farmers and improve the lives of tens of thousands of international farmers with the cooperative's Dairy Development Programme;
- Better climate: Becoming carbon neutral by using clean energy, reducing emissions and through carbon sequestration;
- Better nature: Having a positive biodiversity impact on member farms leveraging FrieslandCampina's Biodiversity Monitor;
- Better packaging: Making FrieslandCampina's packaging 100% circular and carbon neutral;
- Better sourcing: Sustainably sourcing all agriculture raw materials and making them traceable to source.
Together with its stakeholders, FrieslandCampina believes it can accelerate its overall progress in key areas.
"For example, we have developed an internationally renowned Biodiversity Monitor for dairy farmers, together with WWF and Rabobank. The monitoring system has been implemented at our member farms in order to measure and manage biodiversity development at each location," FrieslandCampina said in a press release. "We aim to be carbon neutral towards 2050. The implementation of a carbon footprint monitor measuring greenhouse gas emissions at individual farm level is a big step toward that ambition.
"Our farmers are fundamental to provide good and affordable nourishment to a growing world population for now and the generations to come, and they continue to lead with innovation in support of "Nourishing a better planet". Our invitation is to join our journey and accelerate together."
