South Korean firm Maeil Dairies apologises for contamination incident in milk products
Maeil Dairies, a leading South Korea-based dairy manufacturer, issued an apology on Monday following an incident in which cleaning solution was accidentally mixed into one of its sterilised milk products during production.
Kim Seon-hee, the company's CEO, addressed the matter in a statement on the company's website. Kim explained that the contamination occurred on 19 September at the company's manufacturing plant in Gwangju due to an error in valve operation, which momentarily allowed cleaning solution to mix with the 200-millilitre sterilised milk product.
The company clarified that approximately 50 units of the affected product were delivered to a single client.
The issue came to public attention after several employees at a corporate research centre reported symptoms, including stomach pain and discolouration. These symptoms arose after consuming the affected milk provided through the company cafeteria.
Maeil Dairies has not released further details on actions being taken to address the incident or measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
