Brazil's pork consumption hits record in first half of 2022
Pork consumption in Brazil broke a historical record in the first half of 2022.
As noted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the country's population consumed an average of 18kg of pork between January and June this year in comparison to the 16.9kg consumed in the same period in 2021.
This increase in consumption has happened gradually in recent years - from 14kg per capita in 2010 to 16kg in 2021, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
The higher consumption of pork is evidenced by the increase in the slaughter of pigs in Brazil. The IBGE pointed out that the country had not registered 14 million heads slaughtered in a single quarter since 1997, as occurred in April-June 2022, 7.2% higher than in the same period in 2021.
The increase in slaughtering has also occurred gradually since the beginning of the last decade.
ABPA pointed out that in 2010, 3.237 million tonnes of pigs were slaughtered in Brazil, jumping to 4.701 million tonnes in 2021.
