30,000 swine dead from African swine fever in North Sumatra, Indonesia

 


As of December 15, 2019, 30,000 swine have been killed by African swine fever (ASF) in North Sumatra, Indonesia, with quarantine of the area announced, reported Reuters.

 

Syahrul Yasin Limpo, Minister of Agriculture said his ministry has declared an ASF outbreak, with the disease contained in some parts of the province.

 

Fadjar Sumping Tjatur Rassa, Agriculture Ministry director of animal health said 16 areas in North Sumatra are affected by ASF, with biosecurity screening measures in place for people in contact with the disease. 

 

Rassa said trade movement for swine and swine products have been halted temporarily in the infected areas. There are 1.2 million swine in North Sumatra.
