Blockchain-based trial to implement tracking of Australia's cattle
BeefLedger - a blockchain-based project which aims to eventually track Australia's cattle from their place of origin to meat products sold to consumers - is targeting 45,000 Australian cattle producers for its trial, blockchain news site Ledger Insights reported recently.
The food provenance trial will see the participation of NTI, the country's top truck insurer. It will entail the transportation of cattle from South Australia's Limestone Coast to a processing facility in New South Wales where meat products will be frozen for shipping to China.
"Research shows us that ethical standards and concerns for animal welfare, along with authenticity and proof of product origin, are amongst the top priorities for Chinese consumers. It's also what's driving consumer interest in Australian products," said Warrick Powell, chairman of BeefLedger.
70% of consumers are reported to be most interested in transparency about food products, according to a research conducted by international sustainability strategy and creative agency Futerra and the Consumer Goods Forum.
