The European Union Commission issued 190,000 metric tons of wheat import licenses in the week to Dec. 16, bringing the total amount of import licenses issued since the start of the 2003-04 marketing year on July 1 to 2.113 million tons, according to official E.U. Commission figures released Thursday.

Import licenses were also issued in the week to Dec. 16 for 187,000 tons of corn, bringing the total to 1.641 million tons.

Further, the Commission gave import licenses for 41,000 tons of durum wheat, where the total stands now at 1.142 million tons. It also gave import licenses for 117,000 tons of sorghum, bringing the total to 749,000 tons.

Official figures also showed that in the week to Dec. 16, licenses for 2,000 tons of barley have been issued.

The E.U. faces a grain shortfall of 5 to 8.5 million tons for the 2003-04 marketing year, which is expected to be covered mostly by imports of corn and soft wheat, according to industry analysts.
