Pig slaughter in Brazil hit 14.62 million in Q3 2023

 

 

 

Brazil's pig slaughter totaled 14.62 million head in the third quarter of 2023.

 

In the period, the survey recorded the best slaughter results for July and August, providing the highest quarterly level in the historical series since it began in 1997. This represents an increase of 0.5% compared to the same quarter last year and 2.9% compared to the second quarter of 2023.

 

The cumulative weight of carcasses reached 1.37 million tonnes in the third quarter, which was an increase of 2.5% compared to the third quarter of 2022 and 3.2% compared to the preceding quarter.

 

The slaughter of 79.77 thousand more head of pigs in the third quarter, compared to the same period last year, was driven by increases in 11 of the 24 Federative Units participating in the survey.

 

Among the states with a share of at least 1.0%, there were increases in Santa Catarina (+147.36 thousand head), Paraná (+135.99 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+7.22 thousand head) and Goiás (+1.68 thousand head).

 

The most significant decreases occurred in Minas Gerais (-89.99 thousand head), Mato Grosso (-57.26 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (-40.93 thousand head) and São Paulo (-37.95 thousand head).

 

Santa Catarina continues to lead the way in pig slaughter, with 29.9% of the national share, followed by Paraná (21.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (16.7%).
