Thai researcher seeks funding for research aimed at converting chicken feathers to food

Sorawut Kittibanthorn is seeking funding to continue his research into converting the nutrient component in discarded chicken feathers into lean, protein rich edible food, Reuters reported.

Sorawut said chicken feathers contain protein, and converting this discarded item into edible food will help reduce waste.

He said about 2.3 million tonnes of feathers are discarded in Europe annually. He also said that Asia has 30% more chicken feather waste due to the region's high consumption of meat, which means more waste that could be developed.

Sorawut has prototypes, include his version chicken nuggets and a steak substitute.

Cholrapee Asvinvichit, a Thai food blogger, said the texture of the converted food is complex and advance.

Hathairat Rimkeeree, a food sciences professor at Kasesart University, was surprised by the results too, adding that the product has the potential to become an alternative food source.

Sorawut said his chicken feather-based foods can't be categorised as vegan or vegetarian, but it can be labelled as ethical dining. He plans to approach zero-waste restaurants with his new product.
