Adisseo Asia Pacific launches aquaculture R&D facility in Singapore




Adisseo Asia Pacific last week launched a new Research & Development Centre in Singapore dedicated to aquaculture.

ASA (Aquaculture Station by Adisseo) will focus on nutrition, aquatic animal health, and innovative aquatic science technologies. The company appointed a team of aquaculture professionals to focus on key research topics such as nutrition and health. Located within the Singapore Food Agency's (SFA) Marine Aquaculture Centre (MAC), ASA will be able to tap on SFA's expertise in tropical aquaculture, as well as gain easy access to useful biological materials available at MAC to facilitate its aquaculture research.


ASA aims to support the farmed fish and shrimp sectors and to answer some industry challenges by developing strong partnerships with academics in the Asia Pacific region and worldwide.


With the growing human population and the need for more well-balanced animal proteins, aquaculture will play a major role in the future. The consistent growth of aquaculture relies on the supply of optimised feeds at all life stages for all species. A sustainable development of aquaculture relies on the physiological well-being, health, growth and reproductive success of the different species of fish and shrimp reared under varied environmental conditions. Solid nutrition and health research must be put in place to ensure that aquaculture concretely contributes to the UN's sustainable development goals.


Adisseo helps to reduce the environmental impact of livestock production, as commercial fisheries and aquaculture are rapidly increasing, and the company's mission is to offer solutions to ensure food quality and safety, and further improve the health and nutrition needs for the animals.


Furthermore, it is key to shift from unreliable and obsolete farming practices to fully-controlled and bio-secure systems that mimic agricultural and livestock models. With its new fully-integrated Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) dedicated for research, Adisseo aims to transform and improve farm management with the latest monitoring tools (AI, IOT).


To reduce losses while maximising productivity and profitability in farms, versatile technologies combined with systematic use of data to provide real-time monitoring will help to achieve these goals and increase farmer reaction time in case of problems.


According to David Bal, Adisseo Head of R&D Aquaculture, "With this state-of-the-art research facility allowing full control of water parameters, we can better understand important factors like stress, nutritional deficiencies and the impact of diseases on animal performance and mortality. Farm technology and artificial intelligence can greatly improve yields and the development of new tools will grow continuously to support farmers and feed mills."


The fundamentals are the optimisation of feeds via better knowledge of nutrients and energy requirements, feed technology and the interaction between pathogen, animal the water.


To achieve a balance system and higher yields, Adisseo will focus on innovations such as: Feed additives and NIR technology; Alternative ingredient(s); Palatability and functional feed; Diagnostic tools (stress and diseases); Precision farming (AI and IOT).

With ASA, Adisseo will provide training on the use of technologies, processes, and best practices to shrimp and fish farmers. This new project reinforces the group's commitment towards the development of sustainable additive solutions in Asia and worldwide and is part of Adisseo worldwide animal Nutrition & Health R&D platforms and centres in France, United States and China.
