Dutch companies to use sustainable soy for animal feed
Dutch dairy and meat processors including Friesland Foods, Vion, Gebr. Van Beek Group and the Storteboom Group have joined efforts to develop a programme to buy sustainable soy for the Dutch animal feed sector.
Sustainable soy refers to soy grown in areas that not have been deforested for creating arable land.
The group' objective is to give a cue to the South American soy producers that there is a market for sustainable soy. It plans to buy 50,000 tonnes of sustainable soy in 2009 and to raise this to 150,000 tonnes in 2011.
The Dutch companies pointed out that no soy from Amazon areas that are deforested after 2006 will be bought.
