Brazil May Lose World Leadership in Poultry and Hog Meat Exports To Russia

Brazil is likely to lose the world leadership in poultry and hog meat exports to Russia, due to a measure recently adopted by the Russian government. The measure will create special import quotes that benefit the US, Europe and Paraguay.

If Russia is to keep the measure, as of 2004, Brazil will lose shipments of up to 150,000 m tons of hog meat to Russia, from a total of 310,000 m tons, while the exports of poultry meat will be reduced in 200,000 m tons, from a total of 300,000 m tons.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 70% of the Brazilian poultry meat sales are targeted at Russia.
