27,000 swine die from cholera in Indonesia
Officials say thousands more swine are at risk from the hog-cholera epidemic that have killed between 1,000 to 2,000 swine daily in Medan, North Sumatra over the last three months, reported Channel News Asia.
A veterinary office chief in Medan said these deaths only make up a small number of the 1.2 million swine in North Sumatra.
In November 2019, 1,000 cholera-infected discarded swine carcasses were collected from local waterways by authorities, with police searching for the culprits.
Officials are testing these deceased swine to find out if they are also infected with African swine fever, in addition to hog cholera.
An outbreak of hog cholera killed more than 10,000 swine in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, affecting farmers in the area financially.
