Sarawak, Malaysia implements control measures following ASF detection

The Sarawak, Malaysia Department of Veterinary Services (DVSS) has introduced control measures at swine farms in Serian after African swine fever (ASF) was detected in Mongkos, Tebedu, on November 29, 2024.
Sarawak's Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom confirmed that all other districts in the state remain free of ASF.
Dr Rundi assured the public that there is a sufficient pork supply across Sarawak for the Christmas season and that the meat available in the market is safe for consumption. He urged swine breeders to strengthen biosecurity measures on their farms. These measures include ensuring the presence of vehicle dips, foot dips, and stable perimeter fencing to control the movement of livestock, vehicles, and people.
The minister highlighted that the transfer of live swine is prohibited without a transfer permit issued by the DVSS. He also emphasised that ASF, which currently has no vaccine or treatment, poses a significant risk of economic loss if not managed properly.
Dr Rundi advised breeders to avoid feeding swine uncooked leftovers or scraps, recommending instead that all food be cooked for at least 30 minutes to prevent the spread of the virus. He further stressed that new livestock of unknown health status should not be introduced into farms.
