Researchers in Israel develop real-time cattle tracking system using facial recognition tech

Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said the country's researchers have developed a real-time cattle tracking system using facial recognition technology, Xinhua News reported.

The system, developed at the ministry's Volcani Institute in central Israel, can provide real-time insights into cow well-being, prediction of distress situations, eating behaviours, food consumption estimates, and more, the ministry said.

The ministry also said the system, which uses unique, fast AI algorithms for facial recognition and classification, was designed to remotely monitor each and every cattle without disturbing it with an ear tag or branding.

The system tracks every cattle in the barn in real-time and keeps track of their locations and feeding schedules by taking a frame of each cow's face from any video file shot in the barn and using biometric recognition to identify it.

The ministry said that the facial recognition system can improve the dairy industry by helping to improve cattle living conditions.
