Singapore to start importing Brunei chicken eggs

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said the country will start importing chicken eggs from Brunei, bringing the number of countries and regions permitted to ship “hen shell eggs” to the city-state from 12 in 2019 to 17 today, Channel News Asia reported.

The SFA said Brunei's accreditation as a new source for eggs is another step toward strengthening food cooperation between both nations, as Brunei looks to produce eggs for export while Singapore diversifies its egg import sources.

Grace Fu, Singapore's Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, began her three-day official visit to Brunei on Tuesday with a visit to Golden Chick Livestock Farm. It is Brunei's first farm to export eggs to Singapore.

She is also in Brunei to discuss and strengthen bilateral cooperation in agri-food, environmental, water resource management, and climate change.

Fu hopes the accreditation will lead to new markets for Brunei's agri-tech industry, noting increased business for Brunei's farms.

Imports currently account for roughly 70% of Singapore's egg supply.

According to the SFA, local egg production currently accounts for approximately 30% of Singapore's total egg consumption and complements efforts to diversify import sources.

The agency said efforts to diversify Singapore's egg supply over the last three years have helped to withstand supply disruptions caused by unexpected events such as disease issues and geopolitical tensions, ensuring a stable supply of eggs.

The agency also stated that the upcoming construction of Singapore's fourth egg farm will strengthen the country's local egg supply. When fully operational, Singapore's local egg farms will supply roughly half of the country's egg demand.
