Informa pegs 2007 US corn acres at 85.9 million, soy at 70.4 million

Private analytical firm Informa Economics estimated 2007/08 US planted corn acreage at 85.922 million acres, up 7.361 million from the amount sown last year, sources said. Informa also estimated 2007/08 US soybean acreage at 70.434 million acres, down 5.131 million from 2006.

US corn planted acreage in 2006 was 78.561 million acres according to the US Department of Agriculture, with US soybean acreage at 75.565 million.

In addition, Informa estimated 2007/08 US winter wheat planted acreage at 44.000 million acres, up 3.425 million from the 40.575 million estimated by the USDA in 2006.

On Jan 12, the USDA is scheduled to release a winter wheat seedings estimate for the 2007/08 crop year. The first acreage estimate for the 2007/08 US corn and soybean crops will be released in March.
