China's Ningxia's livestock meat export up eight-fold
From January to November this year, Ningxia's livestock meat export totaled US$1.15 million, up eight-fold compared to the same period last year, according to Ningxia's custom authorities.
Ningxia is China's Islamic region, with a population of more than 2 million. In recent years, due to the economic development of the area, the Halal and Islamic product industry has become a pillar of the economy.
Ningxia current has more than 22 cattle and sheep slaughterhouses for cattle and sheep, with seven having attained internationally certified Halal status. The seven slaughterhouses are also cleared for exports.
According to Ningxia's Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Ningxia's meats are tender, with a high lean meat ratio and is popular in the market.
Sheep meat from Ningxia was first exported to Hong Kong in 2004. Ningxia begun exporting sheep meat to Middle East countries like Jordan and Lebanon in 2005, with volumes reaching 2,400 tonnes that year.
According to Ningxia authorities, revenue from livestock processing industry is expected to hit RMB1.57 billion (US$200 million) while export value is predicted to exceed US$1.3 million this year.
