Upcoming US bill aims to simplify approval for animal feed

US Representatives have introduced a bipartisan bill to streamline the United States' Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval process for animal feed. 

Currently, the average FDA approval time for a feed additive is 10 to 15 years. The Innovative FEED Act would create a new category of animal feeds and clarify the FDA approval process for feed additives which would help speed up the approval process. 

"The agricultural industry is constantly evolving and improving to meet current demands – and it's critical that the regulatory processes surrounding the industry do the same," Representative Angie Craig said in a release on December 8. "That's why I worked with my colleague, Rep. Greg Pence of Indiana, to introduce the bipartisan Innovative FEED Act to make sure we can get products to Minnesota's family farmers in a timely manner."

The Innovative FEED Act is supported by the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, the National Milk Producers Federation, the American Feed Industry Association, the National Green and Feed Association, the US Poultry and Egg Association, the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives and the Agricultural Retailers Association.
