China's Xinjiang plans to expand hog production

According to Xinjiang Livestock Bureau officials, plans are now underway to expand hog production in the largest autonomous regions located in western China.

Through an annual funding of RMB10 million, the government of Xinjiang hopes to build the region into an important hog production region within the next decade.

Under the plan, hog farms will be built in Changji, regions in northern Tianshan, districts in Yili valley as well as in Tarim and Ertix River Valleys. Xinjiang's government intends to raise the region's hog inventory from the current 7 million to 9 million heads by 2010, and to boost cross-province hog trade to 3.5 million heads per year.

Ideal weather conditions and the availability of feed ingredients such as cottonseed meal as well as corn and soy makes Xinjiang a suitable location for developing hog farming. Cost of hog production in Xinjiang is also lower compared with other regions in China.
