SERNAPESCA ruled by Chile's supreme court to report farmed salmon health status
The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) must report the salmon aquaculture health status in Magallanes, as well as the regions of Los Lagos, Los Ríos and Aysén for drug use and treatment of diseases, reported Fish Information & Services.
The report concerns the aquaculture facilities of Salmones Multiexport and Multiexport Pacific Farms that operate in the court-ruled areas. Both companies refused to release information about their salmon aquaculture centres as they allege it will affect their commercial and economic rights.
The Chile supreme court accepted the transparency complaint by the Council for Transparency (CPLT), which means SERNAPESCA has to submit a pesticide history use from both companies, in addition to the potential discovery of two infectious diseases found at the salmon aquaculture facilities of both companies.
Both companies brought the case to court to reserve information regarding the use of Deltramine and Cypermethrin pesticides in their aquaculture centres.
The application of both these pesticides may indicate the presence of flavobacteriosis and Rickettsial salmon syndrome (SRS) in these facilities.
