Haryana, India, to launch 21st livestock census this month
The Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department in Haryana, India, is all set to launch the 21st livestock census from December 13 in the state.
Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana will officially launch the census from Radaur. The survey will cover 16 species of livestock and poultry birds across the state.
As per the authorities, this census is conducted every five years to assess the state of animal husbandry in the region, which is crucial for planning and implementing policies related to livestock management, welfare, and disease control.
The census will cover several livestock species, including cattle, buffaloes, sheeps, goats, pigs, camels, horses, and donkeys, along with poultry species like fowl, duck, turkey, and emu.
The exercise, which has been conducted every five years since 1919, plays a crucial role in policy formulation and the implementation of animal welfare and disease control programmes.
One state nodal officer, 22 district nodal officers (DNOs), 381 supervisors and 1,834 enumerators have been deployed across Haryana to gather detailed data.
The animal husbandry department also started a helpline to assist farmers, said Dr. L. C. Ranga, director general of Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department.
He stressed the importance of the census and said team members would visit door-to-door and collect the details of livestock and poultry.
"The livestock census serves as the backbone for planning in the animal husbandry sector. This 21st census will provide invaluable data for improving livestock management and boosting the rural economy," said Dr. Ranga.
