Live swine prices rise across Vietnam as meat imports continue to grow
The live swine market in Vietnam experienced a notable price increase last week, with prices in several provinces and cities reaching as high as VND 64,000 (US$2.52) per kg.
In the northern region, live swine prices ranged between VND 62,000 (US$2.44) and VND 64,000 (US$2.52) per kg. The highest transaction prices were recorded in Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, and Hai Duong, where swine were sold at VND 64,000 per kg (US$2.52).
In the central and Central Highlands regions, live swine prices saw an increase of VND 1,000 (US$0.039) to VND 2,000 (US$0.079) per kg. Provinces such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Lam Dong, and Binh Thuan reported the highest prices in the region, at VND 63,000 (US$2.48) per kg. Meanwhile, the lowest prices in this region, at VND 60,000 (US$2.37) per kg, were observed in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Khanh Hoa, and Quang Nam.
In the southern region, the market also fluctuated, with prices ranging from VND 61,000 (US$2.40) to VND 64,000 (US$2.52) per kg. Can Tho emerged as the only locality in this region where live swine reached the highest price of VND 64,000 (US$2.52) per kg following latest adjustments.
On the import front, Vietnam sourced pork from 40 markets, with Brazil accounting for 39.28% of the total imported pork. Russia followed with a 29.88% share. India also played a significant role, contributing 22.67% of Vietnam's total meat and meat product imports. In 2023, India supplied Vietnam with 159.48 thousand tonnes of meat and meat products valued at US$531.49 million, reflecting a 13% increase in volume and a 28% increase in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Vietnam's meat imports from various markets, including Australia, the United States, Canada, Poland, South Korea, the Netherlands, Argentina, Hong Kong (China), Iran, Italy, Turkey, Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, and France, continued to grow.
However, there was a decline in meat imports from several major suppliers, including Russia, Brazil, Spain, and Denmark.
