The egg procurement price in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, India, reached ₹5.90 (US$0.071) per egg for the first time, The Hindu reported on December 5.

In the retail market, it touched ₹6.50 (US$0.078) to ₹7 (US$0.084) per egg.

In Namakkal district, more than 1,100 poultry farms house around 70 million birds. These poultry farms produce more than 50 million eggs daily. These eggs are sent to various parts of Tamil Nadu as well as to Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry. Eggs are also exported to foreign countries, especially to Gulf countries.

Apart from this, eggs are supplied to the noon meal scheme at government and aided schools. Following the monsoon season, the price started to increase over the past two weeks, and now it has hit ₹5.90 (US$0.071) per egg. This is the first time in the history of the Namakkal poultry industry that egg procurement touched ₹5.90. The higher procurement price earlier was ₹5.85 (US$0.070).

Poultry owners claimed that due to the increase in fodder prices, the production cost of eggs also rose. As such, new birds were not added to the poultry farms.
