Hungary's programmes helping pork sector produced quality meat "efficiently and competitively"

Hungary is making significant strides in supporting the pork sector through development funding and consumption campaigns, Hungary Today reported.
At a press conference, Zsolt Feldman, Secretary of State for Agriculture, emphasised the role of subsidies in improving production efficiency and boosting competitiveness on the international market.
"The development programmes will ensure that producers in Hungary can produce high-quality pork efficiently and competitively," he said.
Under the Rural Development Program, nearly 450 pig farmers have received around Ft85 billion (US$229.5 million) in funding, with an additional Ft10.2 billion (US$27.5 million) allocated this year for animal welfare support. This has contributed to positive growth, as Hungary's pig population has risen by almost 100,000 in the last year, and slaughter rates are expected to increase by 6-7%.
Promoting pork consumption is also a priority, with campaigns highlighting the meat's nutritional value.
"Pork is a valuable source of protein and can be consumed safely in a balanced lifestyle," Feldman added.
These efforts have resulted in an increase in per capita pork consumption, which has risen by almost 10 kilogrammes over the past decade, reaching 30 kilogrammes per person.
However, the domestic market faces challenges from imported pork, especially from Poland, Germany, Austria, and Spain. Despite this, the Secretary of State urges consumers to support local farmers by choosing Hungarian pork.
The Hungarian pork sector is on a positive trajectory, but the future depends on maintaining consumer awareness and supporting local producers.
