Myanmar's feed demand to reach four million tonnes in 2020

Myanmar's demand for livestock feed is expected to reach four million tonnes next year amid a steady growth of the industry, said U Mya Han, chairman of Myanmar Livestock Federation.

"Total animal feed demand increased 33% from 2018 to 2020 due to the rapid growth of the livestock sector,” he said in a press conference last week. “The demand is increasing at the rate of15% annually."

The organisation's records showed that feed demand in 2017 was 2.6 tonnes, while the estimated feed consumption last year was three tonnes.

According to the Global Agricultural Information Network report last year, feed production in the country is controlled by foreign companies, which hold about a 60% share of domestic sales.

Han said the livestock industry plays a very important role in the country's economy as well as in ensuring food security.

Local demand for livestock product have been increasing due to population growth, increase in income of the people and urbanisation, which will continue for the next three decades.

According to the National Livestock Baseline Survey Report 2019 released in January, there are 9.5 million of cattle, 1.8 million of buffalos, 2.1 million of sheep and goats, 5.8 million of pigs, 70 million of chickens and 8.9 million of turkeys, ducks, geese and quails in the country.
