Various viral diseases of different species were reported in Europe in the past week. The following report provides an overview of the disease situations.
EUROPE
1. Reoccurrence of African swine fever virus detected in Moldova
Reoccurrence of African swine fever virus was detected in Moldova, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reports.
The information was received by the OIE on December 2 from Dr. Vitalie Caraus, Head of Animal Health and Welfare Department, Animal Health and Welfare Department, National Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Moldova, Chisinau, Moldova.
The outbreak event was reported to have started on November 12, with one outbreak reported in Hincesti. Two fatal cases were identified in swine, resulting in 29 others becoming susceptible, which were all killed and disposed of. The source of the outbreaks was unknown.
Control measures included movement control inside the country, surveillance within and outside containment and protection zones, traceability, quarantine, official destruction of animal products, official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste, control of wildlife reservoirs, zoning, disinfection, disinfestation, control of vectors, and ante- and post-mortem inspections. Vaccination is permitted but no treatment was given to affected animals.
2. Reoccurrence of bluetongue virus detected in Belgium
Reoccurrence of bluetongue virus, serotype 8, was detected in Belgium, the OIE reports.
The information was received by the OIE on December 3 from Dr. Jean-François Heymans, Director, Animal Health and Safety of Products of Animal Origin, Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC), Bruxelles, Belgium.
The outbreak event was reported to have started on February 19, with one outbreak reported in Liege. Three cases were identified in cattle, resulting in 37 becoming susceptible. The source of the outbreaks was vectors.
Control measures included surveillance within containment and protection zones, screening, and zoning. Vaccination is permitted but no treatment was given to affected animals.
3. Reoccurrence of infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus detected in Italy
Reoccurrence of infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus was detected in Italy, the OIE reports.
The information was received by the OIE on December 6 from Dr. Silvio Borrello, Chief Veterinary Officer, Food Safety and Collegial Bodies for Health Protection, Ministère de la Santé, Department for Veterinary Public Health, Rome, Italy.
The outbreak was reported to have started on November 18 in Riva del Garda, Trento in northern Italy. 900 fatalities were reported in rainbow trout, resulting in 170,000 becoming susceptible. The source of the outbreaks was unknown.
Control measures included movement control inside the country, official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste, killing for commercial use or own use, and disinfection. Vaccination is prohibited and no treatment was given to affected animals.
