China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs proposes plan to boost swine production

The ministry's three-year plan targets a 70% swine production self-sufficiency rate for the country's populous southeast provinces, reported Reuters.

The southeast provinces included in the ministry's plans are Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Fujian, and Tianjin city.

This plan comes after the ministry's statement regarding swine stocks recovering by the end of 2019, and for swine production levels to hit normal levels by end 2020.

The African swine fever outbreak has cut swine herds in China, resulting in the country looking to overseas meat imports to supplement dwindling supplies. Demand for pork has increased especially with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.
